One of the 18 elemental Pokemon types, the Dragon types are perhaps the most majestic, fierce and mysterious of all. Their sheer form speaks of raw strength, with nasty claws, and razor-sharp teeth. Talking about Pokemon Go, Dragon-types are one of the rarest types, as most of them are Legendaries, and thus are considered to be a legacy by every trainer. In PvP perspective, they can be pretty viable as they are resistant to many types; and if you manage to get their legacy movesets and a balanced team, you will have a guaranteed victory.

Here we will be looking and ranking some of the best Dragon-types in Pokemon Go. These rankings are for PvP perspective, and not for raids and gym battles. Therefore, you might not see the popular names in the list: the list below is only for the Go Battle Leagues.

10. Garchomp

The dual Ground and Dragon-type Pokemon Garchomp is known to have the best Dragon-type move: Dragon tail and outrage; as well as the best Ground-type move, Mud Shot and Earthquake. Many consider it to be the Gen IV equivalent of Dragonite, and in terms of stats, it falls behind just a bit. It is a true beast when the opponents’ shields are down, and even when shielded, does a massive damage before going down.

Talking about Ultra League, there are better options for both Ground and Dragon-types, and owing to the CP cap of 2500, it cannot show it’s true potential. However, add it to your Master team, and you get an attacker with a monstrous HP, making it the most dominant pseudo legendary in Pokemon Go, till date.

9. Giratina (Origin)

Giratina Origin is considered to be one of the most threatening Master League opponents even in Ultra League, and is a must-have. While Giratina Origin is considered to be better in the Master League, it is only because of its higher CP cap. With greater Attack stat and easy access to STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), the highly Attack focused Giratina Origin shines the best in Master League.

Giratina Origin works the best as a closer to end the game, and gets it’s key wins against some major Master League contenders like Melmetal and Mewtwo!

Fast Move: Shadow Claw

Charge Move: Dragon Pulse, Shadow Ball

8. Hydreigon

A really powerful Dark and Dragon-type Pokemon, Hydreigon is a decent addition for Master League, though not recommended at all for the Ultra. It falls behind the other Dragons in terms of its moveset; but the STAB with all Dragon moves makes it something the opponents cannot ignore. However, it falls behind in terms of Defence and would need a more powerful moveset in future to make up for that. But with a very high CP cap and a wide moveset pool, this Generation V beast would prove to be a good companion for your team, preferably in Master.

Fast Move: Dragon Breath

Charge Move: Dragon Pulse, Dark Pulse

7. Zekrom

The dual Electric and Dragon-type legendary Zekrom is the undeniable king of Electric-types in Pokemon Go; but it does quite well as a Dragon-type attacker: it’s ranked 4th in terms of TDO, and 7th in terms of DPS. While it has an incredible attack stat and a decent bulk, it’s Dragon-type movesets reduces it’s DPS, and thus, it performs best when shielded.

However, it’s powerful moves deal massive damage and if unshielded, it’s highly unlikely that it’s opponent survives it’s attack. Though not so useful in Ultra League because of presence of better Dragons, it can be highly useful in the Master League, and can prove to be a great lead attacker.

Fast Move: Dragon Breath

Charge Move: Outrage, Wild Charge

6. Latios

Being a dual Psychic and Dragon-type, Latios gains a number of weaknesses; however it also has a number of resistances, and performs well against other powerful Psychic and Dragon-types. The low Stamina of Latios is made up by it’s impressive attack and defence, and a high DPS. Ranked 9th for top attacker in Pokemon Go, Latios is also the third best Psychic-type attacker, making it an excellent choice in your team.

Although it has more potential as a Psychic-type attacker, it’s versatile moveset allows it to perform well as a Dragon-type, especially in the Great and Master League.

Fast Move: Dragon Breath

Charge Move: Dragon Claw, Psychic

5. Reshiram

Reshiram is not only the best Fire-type Pokemon in Pokemon Go, but also performs quite well with its Dragon-type moves. It might not outperform other top-tier Dragons because of lack of good Dragon-type movesets and a low DPS, but as a Dragon it can be pretty offensive, taking down Giratina Altered, Swampert, Cresselia and Registeel with one shield left.

Talking about Ultra League, a massive CP of 4038 allows it to unleash it’s true strength. It can perform really well when the opponents’ shields are down, and thus serves as a great attacker.

Reshiram’s Best PvP Moveset

Fast Move: Dragon Breath

Charge Move: Draco Meteor, Stone Edge

4. Palkia

Max CPAttackDefenceStamina

A dual Dragon and Water-type, Palkia is an excellent attacker with an impressive bulk. It is vulnerable to only Dragon and Fairy-type moves; but if you have Dragon-type moves, it can take down its Dragon opponents as well. One significant advantage is that Palkia does not have any double weakness to Ice-type attacks, and has a double resistance to Water and Fire-type attacks.

The only factor which holds it back from being a top-tier attacker is it’s movepool. Palkia’s charged moves have a great energy requirement, and need one or both shields to take down its opponent. Once it gets its exclusive move, Spacial Rend, it might become as powerful as it should have been.

Palkia’s Best PvP Moveset

Fast Move: Dragon Breath

Charge Move: Draco Meteor, Aqua Tail

3. Dragonite

Max CPAttackDefenceStamina

Even though a non-legendary, Dragonite has its Attack stats and stamina close to the Legendaries, making it one of the cheaper but powerful Dragon-type companions for your team. Not only does it fare well in raids, but it serves as a great attacker (serves good when the opponents’ shields are down) and a decent closer (serves well when you don’t have any shields left).

If you have one with the correct movesets, it can prove to be a beast in any league- Great, Ultra or Master. However, having all Dragon-type moves makes it vulnerable to Togekiss (the greatest threat to Dragon-types), so you might want to watch out for that.

Dragonite Best PvP Moveset

Fast Move: Dragon Breath

Charge Move: Dragon Claw, Outrage

2. Giratina (Altered)

Max CPAttackDefenceStamina
3379187225284

Giratina Altered is considered to be one of the most threatening Ultra League opponents, and is definitely a must-have. While Giratina Origin is considered to be better in the Master League, it is only because of its higher CP cap. With greater Defence and easy access to STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), the bulky Giratina Altered shines in the Ultra League, while performing almost at par with Giratina Origin in the Master League.

Fast Move: Dragon Breath

Charge Move: Dragon Claw, Shadow Sneak

1. Dialga

Max CPAttackDefenceStamina
4038275211205

A Steel and Dragon-type, Dialga has only two weaknesses: Fighting and Ground-type, while having a ton of resistances (10) as well as two double resistances. It is the only Dragon-type that cannot take super-effective damage from other Dragon-types, and can prove to be a great asset to your team. However, the lack of a good move, as well as its signature move- the Roar of Time, it becomes a bit disappointing. Nonetheless, it’s stats and resistances makes it the undisputed leader of the Master League.

Fast Move: Dragon Breath

Charge Move: Draco Meteor, Iron Head
